Shell

Designing a platform for fleet management and safety compliance.

Digital transformation, machine learning

Background

OSHA compliance is Shell’s top priority at sea due to the risk of deadly incidents and costly violations. Previously, data collection for maintenance and safety was managed in complex Excel sheets, leading to low reporting rates and increased litigation risk. AI and machine learning revolutionized this process with a user-friendly interface for real-time data entry and analysis, enabling predictive risk management and enhancing compliance.

What we did

We designed Poseidon, a state-of-the-art web app that leverages bespoke machine learning algorithms, drawing from historical maintenance and safety incident reports to proactively predict and mitigate risks. This powerful tool enables real-time reporting and comprehensive data analysis, empowering fleet managers to address potential issues before they occur. Deployed across more than 20,000 Shell laptops and desktops used on sea vessels, Poseidon enhances the efficiency and safety of fleet operations worldwide.

Results

In the first year, safety incidents were reduced by 18%, and maintenance costs decreased by 12%. The ease of reporting in the user-friendly interface led to a 31% increase in the number of maintenance and safety reports submitted.
